Damage and Knockback

In order to eliminate your opponents, you have to damage them and punch them off the map into the void. A fist punch deals 4 damage at your opponent, the more damage your enemy has the more knockback they will receive with each hit. At 0 damage your opponent receives 0 knockback, while at 125 damage they receive the maximum of 10 knockback with each hit. You can see the opponents damage under their name, the colours of their name will also change depending on the amounts of damage received.

While you are playing a match you will find items which will benefit you in eliminating your enemies. At the moment there are 28 items accessible that can spawn on the ground, these can be divided into weapons, food, and buffs. The complete list with descriptions and details can be found in the items article.

This picture shows the default interface while playing SMASH. Click on the image to increase size.

Time bar

Since the 1.8 update, the time bar is above your XP-Bar. It will count down from 10 minutes to indicate when the match will end.

Players

All players start with 0 damage, this exact percentage can be seen under their nametag. As the amount of damage increases the colour of the nametag will change. Below 50 damage it will be green, above 50 damage it will be yellow and above 100 damage it will be red.

Xp level

Your xp level indicates the amount of damage you have received. Your damage will increase when being hit and can be decreased by eating food.

Health bar

Your health bar shows the amount of lives you have left, all players start with 3 lives. You lose a life every time you die by falling into the void, or by taking rapid damage (standing in lava, suffocation). You cannot increase the amount of lives you have during a match.

Experience bar

This is your energy bar, you will notice that it depletes when you double jump. You are able to recharge it immediately by standing on a block or by being hit. Your energy bar will also deplete when you use the SMASH ability, however, it will now take 10 seconds for your energy bar to recharge.

Hotbar

Your hotbar displays the item you are currently wielding. If you pick up an item by walking over it, it will automatically appear in your first slot. You are only able to wield one item at a time. To pick up a different item, first drop the old one with your drop item hotkey, which by default is "Q".

Scoreboard

The scoreboard displays the map name and all players that were active when the match started. Behind each player is a number which shows the amount of lives left for that player.

Chat

An example of the SMASH chat

It can be hard to keep track of everything that happens in SMASH, the chat will help you with that.

As you can see in the image, the chat shows you several things. The number after each player states their ELO score which you gain by playing ranked matches. From top to bottom, an explanation of all messages.

  • This message will pop up each time someone is killed by another player during the match.
  • Same as above but the other way around.
  • Each time you die, the chat will show you how many lives you have left. This shows the same as your health bar and the scoreboard.
  • This shows that a player died without being hit for a while.
  • Same as point 3.
  • If you notice this message popping up in your chat, it means someone has grabbed you and they are likely to throw you away.
  • This message lets you know that your energy bar is still recharging.

Double Jumping

While playing SMASH you have the ability to double jump, this can be performed by double tapping your spacebar either on the ground or in the air. While having double jumped you will not be able to perform another double jump, your energy bar needs to be recharged. To recharge your energy bar you have to stand on a block or be hit by another player. You will also not be able to double jump when you have used your SMASH ability (see below). When double jumping you will boost in the direction you are looking at. If you look up or down you will jump straight up, but if you look forward you will jump forward. Your current speed does also affect your jump ability, so you will be able to jump further while running or when under the effect of the speed item.

Smashing

Smashing is an ability to ground pound which will give nearby players damage and a certain knockback depending on their damage. To SMASH on the ground you need to be in the air and use the sneak hotkey, which is "Left Shift" by default. Doing so will plummet you towards the ground giving of a particle effect. The downside of using the SMASH ability is the inability to double jump for 10 seconds. Your energy bar needs to be recharged which will take 10 seconds.

Grabbing & Throwing

In SMASH you are able to grab players and throw them away. This is performed by right-clicking on a player. When right-clicked the player will sit on top of you for 3 seconds. To throw a grabbed player away you have to left click, the distance they fly away will be affected by the amount of damage the grabbed player has. When you are grabbed you are able to escape from his grab by pressing on the sneak hotkey, which is "Left Shift" by default.

Maps

SMASH features a lot of different maps for players to battle on, you can choose a map you like while creating a new match. Once you start or join a match you will be sent to the spawnbox of the map, here you can choose to spectate a match in progress or wait for a new match to start. A detailed list with information about each map can be found in the maps article.

Scores

Final scores of a SMASH game

After each match, the scores, statistics, and ELO change (if you played a ranked match) for each player will show up in the chat. The statistics show the top killers, damagers and item users. If the match finished because the 10-minute limit was reached the winner will be based on the top killer or if that is a draw, the person with the current highest damage will win (not the top damager).
