Overview of Hell Tree

Hell Tree is an island surrounded by lava which is only accessible by crossing a command block bridge called Hell Tree Bridge Control. It is among the most dangerous locations on the map due to its multiple zombie and pigmen spawners and lava hazards.

Once the pressure plate is stepped on, an arching fire-like stained glass bridge will start appearing that will lead from the pressure plate platform to the island. To access Hell Tree, one must step onto the segment and follow it all the way to the landing on the other side. Players sometimes put cobwebs in the middle of the bridge to stop people from entering, so make sure to bring grenades.

The unique potion chest that spawns here can spawn fire resistance potions, making it a worthy trip to get these potions to be used in other locations and even dungeons.

Travel Advisory/Warnings

  • A video showing how to loot Hell Tree can be found here.
  • It is better to break the chests on the path or at the tree to avoid fighting endlessly spawning zombies and zombie pigmen. Getting onto the protruding giant spikes and shooting the zombies with a bow or throwing grenades is the best way to deal with them, even better if one of the spikes can only be accessed by jumping over the lava streams surrounding them, as zombies will not attempt crossing it, and will burn to death if they fall in.
  • It is not recommended to come here at night, as many zombies and zombie pigmen spawn and it can be tricky to stay in a safe area to loot.
  • There are spawners located under most structures, such as the skull shrines and nether brick spikes, where most of the loot chests spawn at.
  • There is no water source anywhere nearby so bring at least two water bottles and lots of food if planning on staying for a while.
  • The explosion of a baby pigman can very easily knock anyone into the lava surrounding the location. Try to remember where pigmen spawn to reduce the chances of unexpectedly hitting a spawning baby pigman and getting launched off the spiral.
  • This location may be easier if accompanied by other players. However, more zombies will spawn with multiple players.
  • Be very careful on the rock mountain jutting out in the south that serves as a possible route here-- it is confirmed that zombie and zombie pigman spawners are present, scattered above the Mantle wall section on the mountain.
  • This is a relatively low-traffic location for its abundance of easily-camped iron gear.

Trivia

  • Hell Tree was rebuilt on March 5th, 2019. The location is now much taller, the way up to the tree was changed to be a simple spiral to the top and two smaller spirals were added to the south and north of the main one. The tree is also incredibly small when compared to the current location and the old version.
  • The tree's "leaves" were turned into glowstone, similar to the 2012 version, for April Fools 2018. However, the trunk was unchanged.
  • Hell Tree is one of the only locations with a pots_rare that is accessible without a button. These pot rares offer fewer items per chest in exchange for more guaranteed safety. The others being Tristitia, Floating Islands, both of which are not really worth it, Barathrum Caverns and Riel.
    • Barathrum Caverns and Riel are the safest of the five locations.

Lore

Lore Book

  • A Lore Book rests in front of the Hell Tree at the top:

Hell Tree - LoreMan

Atop this outcropping in the western caldera, sits the Tree of Agni, or as it is commonly known now – Hell Tree. After the loss of Axis Mundi, these northern volcanoes were raised from the earth and inside one crater, the sapling that would grow into Hell Tree was found.

Worshippers of Agni often took pilgrimages from Frostbain up the dangerous, steep slopes of Mount Therum to catch even the slightest glimpse at this wonder; this beautiful, blazing visage of Agni.

When the gods were wrenched from this world the volcanoes erupted, raining hellfire, ash, and rock upon the world, instantly incinerating the nearby structures built atop this mountain.

Yet, as the ash cleared and the desolation became visible, the tree still stood; its hellish glow flickering ever so slightly. Agni’s flame may have been snuffed, but this spark still remained.

It is said that you can still hear the cries of those unlucky few who had taken that fateful last pilgrimage here as they were roasted within those caves…for they had unwittingly walked into Hell.
